The Birch Team
Chief Strategy Officer
Kenneth is a recognized leader in renewable energy strategy, having structured and negotiated over 3GW of corporate renewable energy transactions. Moreover, he is known as someone to continually push the boundaries of what is possible in the market. Since 2011 he has helped spearhead the introduction of reinsurance-based weather risk-transfer products to the renewable markets, thereby driving greater capital efficiency.
Prior to founding Birch, Kenneth was Director of Innovation for Energy Strategy & Research at Microsoft, where he was responsible for overseeing the company’s wholesale renewable energy and portfolio management strategies to manage the economic and environmental risk associated with purchasing nearly one billion dollars of electricity worldwide annually. Before joining Microsoft Kenneth was Managing Director of Market Analytics at Altenex, the first brokerage house for corporate renewables. Altenex was sold to the publicly traded utility Edison International in 2016.
In the past Kenneth worked at Google, where he was the first energy expert on its Energy & Site Selection team, created Google Energy LLC and served as cleantech advisor to Google Ventures. He has worked for over a decade in the renewable energy space, including experience at Constellation Energy, Charles River Associates, Cambridge Energy Research Associates, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the Rocky Mountain Institute. Kenneth holds a BS, summa cum laude, in Mechanical Engineering and MEng in Operations Research, both from Cornell University, and a MS in Environmental Studies, with a focus on energy economics, from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
